THE EXEMPLARY LIFE OF ST ALPHONSUS
During the Angelus on August 2nd, 2010, Pope Benedict also recalled the exemplary lives of several Saints, such as: Saint Alphonsus Maria de Liguori, founder of the Redemptorists and patron of confessors, and Saint John Vianney - the Curé of Ars - patron recalled in the Year for Priests. Pope Benedict noted that richness of the Saints is rooted in their choice of serving God over the quest for material things.

You are aware that Haiti, and especially the region of Port-au-Prince, was severely afflicted by a serious earthquake. Most of the capital was destroyed, and there have been many casualties. A worldwide effort to assist in this humanitarian crisis is presently underway.
The Redemptorists in Haiti were spared the loss of any confreres. However, in Port-au-Prince, our house, church, and other buildings were destroyed. Some family members of the confreres have died and suffered serious wounds. So have many of the people whom we serve, including the students and teachers at our parish school.

Gerry O’Connor and Sean Duggan both Redemptorist priests were offered the opportunity to travel to Haiti at short notice to both express solidarity with the Redemptorsits and the people of Haiti and to deliver emergency food and medicine.
