Blessed Zenon Kovalyk

Blessed Zenon was born in 1903.  He took his vows as a Redemptorist in 1926 and was ordained in 1932 after which he was engaged in mission work.  During the night of 20th – 21st December 1940 he was arrested and underwent torture and brutal interrogation.  During his six months in prison he endured no less than twenty-eight interrogations, during which he was always savagely beaten.  The German forces entered Lviv in June 1941 and when the soviet prisons were opened to free the captives, heaps of corpses were found showing clear signs of torture.  According to witnesses, Blessed Zenon was crucified against on a wall in the prison.  He was thirty-eight.

Blessed Basil Velychkovskyi

Blessed Basil was born in 1903.  He entered the seminary in 1920, and after his ordination to the diaconate he joined the Redemptorists.  Ordained a priest in 1925 he spent more than twenty years working as a missioner.  He was arrested on 11th April 1945 and sentenced to death, later commuted to ten years imprisonment and forced labour.  Freed in 1955 he resumed his pastoral work in secret.  In 1963 Metropolitan Joseph Slipyj ordained him a bishop.  He was again arrested in 1969 and condemned to three more years in prison.  On his release the soviet authorities would not allow him to return to Lviv.  After a brief stay in Yugoslavia he made his way to Rome, where he was received by Pope Paul VI.  In June 1972 he travelled to Canada, and there died on 30th June 1973, as a result of a slow-acting poison given him prior to his departure for Yugoslavia.

Blessed Francis X. Seelos

Blessed Francis was born in Germany in 1819.  He join the Redemptorists, entering the noviciate in America, he was professed in 1843 and ordained a priest in December 1844.  He began his pastoral ministry in Pittsburgh as assistant pastor to St. John Neumann.  Then became a full-time itinerant missionary preacher, preaching in English and German.  In September 1866 he became pastor of St. Mary’s church in the Irish quarter of New Orleans and thirteen months later he died during a yellow fever epidemic, a martyr to charity in caring for the sick.  He was only 48 years old.

Blessed Gennaro Sarnelli

CodeBlessed Gennaro was born in Naples in 1702 and admitted to the Redemptorists in 1736.  His apostolate was mostly among the outcasts and prostitutes of Naples.  He was active also in a literary apostolate, publishing 30 works aimed at the spiritual renewal of the society of his day.  He died in Naples on 30th June 1744 aged 42 years.  He is highly regarded for his social work on behalf of women in the early part of eighteenth century Europe.

Blessed Nicholas Charnetskyi

Blessed Nicholas was born in 1884.  Following his ordination in 1909 he taught in the seminary.  In 1919 he entered the Redemptorist Congregation.  He was consecrated bishop in 1931.  On 11th April 1945 he was arrested, accused of being "an agent of the Vatican" and condemned forced labour in Siberia.  Despite torture and interrogation he found ways of comforting his fellow prisoners.

Released in 1956 at the point of death he made an unexpected partial recovery and from his sick bed guided the Ukrainian Catholic Church which had survived underground.  He died on 2nd April 1959, at the age of 75.
