St. Alphonsus M. de' Liguori |
|
St. Alphonsus, the founder of the Redemptorists, was born in 1696. After graduating in civil and church law he practised with outstanding success for ten years but he abandoned his legal career, studied theology, and was ordained a priest at the age of 30.
In 1732 he founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. Alphonsus was ordained Bishop of Sant’ Agata dei Goti in 1762 and thirteen years later he resigned aged 79.
As well as being a missioner Alphonsus wrote about 111 works, notably his Moral Theology. His views on the primacy of conscience have led to the renewal of moral theology in the post-Vatican II era. The Redemptorists are proud of their founder and grateful for the example he gave to them and to the Church.
