Vocations

“Blessed by God with the ministry of reconciliation, Redemptorists announce the good news of salvation and the “favourable time” so that people be converted, believe in the Gospel, really live their baptism … the chief object of their preaching is to lead people to a radical choice regarding their life – a decision for Christ …”

(Redemptorist Constitution 11)

The above quotation from the guidebook for Redemptorist life sums up our vocation. The Redemptorist vocation, however, is not so much about a job to be done, but rather about a process that we ourselves must go through and experience, and then help others to experience.

The decision to believe in the Gospel and live our baptism well is of course the vocation of every Christian. Redemptorists, however, following in the footsteps of St. Alphonsus Liguori, have felt a strong invitation to make a radical choice in life, a particular decision for Christ, and dedicate ourselves more fully to proclaim the Gospel of Plentiful Redemption especially to the poor and most abandoned.

Redemptorists should be men who are mature in faith, capable of listening to God’s people and responding appropriately with understanding and compassion. They are people who hear the joys and sorrows of our time and bring them to the heart of the church as “humble and courageous servants … of the Gospel of Christ.”

We continue to invite and encourage young men to listen carefully to the promptings of the Spirit in our age. The needs of God’s people and our world are very different today that in the past. God calls people of different talents and outlooks, to announce the ‘favourable time’ to their own generation.
